Manuka Honey Health Benefits

My son loves some raw honey! As I’m writing this blog on manuka honey health benefits, my son (who is sitting next to me) says, “Mom! It’s the best thing in the world!”  I can’t disagree with him. And let me tell you that $40 I spent didn’t get a big jar. Nope. I got a small jar that could fit in my palm.  Was I crazy? What was so special that I would spend that much money on honey and not get that much? It wasn’t the pasteurized junk honey you get in most stores (yuck, I never recommend these types of honey). Most honey available in stores aren’t ideal. They are heated to a temperature that kills the benefits and has additives. Even if it’s labeled ORGANIC, but it’s still not raw, that’s not worth it.  It wasn’t your local raw honey either (which is what I usually recommend!).

So, what was it?

The golden goo is called Manuka Honey – Raw.

What is it?

This type of honey is made from a Manuka bush located in New Zealand. Of course, the makers are the beautiful bumbling bees. What creates such a difference from Manuka honey to a local raw honey is the nutritional content. The nutritional content in Manuka honey is so much greater than in regular raw honey. Dr. Axe states that it’s 4x a greater nutritional content.

Some nutrients that are found in Manuka honey are:

  • B Vitamins
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Zinc
  • Potassium
  • Iron
  • And more…..

Health Benefits

If you find something your kid likes & it’s healthy, you just go with it. You go with the flow, mama. And if spending that much on honey will help my son stay healthier, that is exactly what I’ll do. I would spent thousands of dollars if he was sick, so I need to be able to spend money on preventing him from being sick like that. Prevention is much easier than treatment.

As I always do, I dug into the studies. It’s my duty as a parent to be educated in all that I give my children. So, here I am! And it actually turned me into what I am today!

Hold on tight, you might find yourself on Amazon at the end of this blog trying to get your small luscious jar of Manuka honey.

Manuka honey holds strong antimicrobial purposes. Manuka honey has been used externally on wounds to inhibit infections and internally as well. A study that was done in Microbiology Society showed the power of Manuka honey and it inhibiting the exact bacteria that causes strep throat,

Manuka honey permeated 24 h established biofilms of  resulting in significant cell death and dissociation of cells from the biofilm.

MRSA, which is an antibiotic resistant bacteria, was also put to the test of Manuka honey. A patient who developed an ulcer on the leg was treated with Manuka honey and MRSA was eradicated completely in the ulcer and healing started. YOU GUYS?! This is some evidence-based nutrition!

In the conclusion of a study done by the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy,

Enlarged cells containing septa were observed in MRSA exposed to inhibitory concentrations of manuka honey, suggesting that cell division was interrupted. These changes were not caused by either the sugars or methylglyoxal in honey and indicate the presence of additional antibacterial components in manuka honey.

Manuka honey is also being studied for creating a dental environment promoting less cavities, reducing the bacteria S. Mutans. Two groups of children were studied – one group using a regular brushing routine and the other group added Manuka honey to their regular brushing routine. At the end of 21 days, the children that used the Manuka honey had reduced S. Mutans in their mouth.

A study done in Contemporary Clinical Dentistry also showed that Manuka honey reduced plaque quite significantly. More than xylitol, which is known to help improve mouth health.

A study that was done showed that Manuka honey was combined with a prescribed anti-inflammatory in rats that had colitis and showed to improve the inflammation in the colon.

What about viruses? Specifically influenza? Since everyone hypes about flu season and is quick to go get flu shots, Manuka honey was shown to INHIBIT INFLUENZA VIRUS REPLICATION.

Do you understand why I bought my son this honey? The antibacterial & antiviral protection, especially because he is always exposed to new illnesses in school. Manuka honey has nutritional content to nourish his body and protective properties to reduce any sickness he may get exposed to.

This is the Manuka honey that we bought at Whole Foods, but is available on Amazon as well!

You can even use this ingredient  in our turmeric honey face mask!
