Stomach Virus Natural Remedies
Can we talk about the stomach virus natural remedies really quick? Because it’s going rampant. ‘Tis the season. It happens around the holidays and literally the last thing you want to have to worry about is getting the stomach virus when you’re trying to travel and enjoying all the holiday foods. I wanted to bring to you some top supplements that I love and they’ve been really effective for me and my family as well as clients and friends. Most of them do have some scientific backing, maybe not directly with the stomach virus, but just in general of just supporting your immune system. That’s the best thing that you can do with any virus is support the immune system so it can fight it off better and quickly.
Activated Charcoal
One of them that we really love with stomach bug is activated charcoal. This has very adsorptive properties and it helps bind things throughout your GI tract and help you, well, bind it and flush it. It doesn’t make you have diarrhea. Some people experience constipation. I’ve never experienced that before when taking it. It’s known to be really helpful with gas, gas cramps and pain. Amazing. Seriously amazing. Works very effectively for that.
With stomach bugs, because there’s a lot of grumbling, and uncomfortable and bloat and gas or upset stomach, this helps so much with just relieving some symptoms. Now, with activated charcoal, you don’t want to take it around any other supplements or any other medications because it will just absorb the medication and you won’t get the benefits of other supplements or medications that you have to take. Take it by itself at least two hours away from anything else.
Probiotics
Some other supplements that I recommend to have is probiotics and you can get the lactobacillus strains, the bifido strains, S. Boulardii, which is more of a yeast. Bacillus spores/Megaspore is really fantastic. It’s in our Fullscript dispensary if you want to go grab it, because you can only get it via practitioners. Any type of probiotic, though, is really beneficial to help.
Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes are actually super helpful, too, in cases of stomach bugs. This is helping your body digest any type of food that you can have that you can hold down. Don’t really take it during active phases of vomiting when you can’t really hold anything down, but they’re great for a couple days after and you can start eating again. Sometimes you have that stomach feeling where it’s still uncomfortable, you feel like you’re not digesting, it’s sitting in your stomach – This helps break foods down even further, so those can be really great.
Immune Support
And then just your basic immune system help, whether it’s elderberry syrup, turmeric, vitamin C, and ginger. Ginger is also fantastic, whether you can take it as a tea or a supplement. That is naturally known to be anti-nausea. With the stomach virus, there’s nothing that directly just cures it, but we just can help support our body, get it out of the body and reduce some of the discomfort.
So, those are all the things that we do in our house when the stomach bug tends to come around. I actually have a whole blog about more than just supplements, but actually walking you through my very OCD “This is what we do when a kid starts throwing up and we don’t want to pass around to our family.”
I hope everyone stays well and that you and your family stay safe from stomach bug season and keep these stomach virus natural remedies on hand!
