01 Mar Matcha Latte {Dairy Free}
A current obsession of mine is a matcha latte. I took my 23 + Me genetic test last year and went through my genes and found out that I metabolize caffeine slow. While I still drink some coffee, I really wanted to branch out and find other morning drinks.
Matcha lattes have been around for a while. Honestly, the matcha bandwagon has come and gone. But, I was pleasantly surprised how much I love them. I tried matcha before and wasn’t a fan. But, I just put matcha with hot water and honey and it was eh.
This latte version has me going for seconds! A couple of health benefits of matcha…
- Loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants help reduce the amount of free radicals in our body that can cause damage to our cells. It’s very protective against cancer. A big antioxidant in matcha and green tea is called EGCG. There was a study that showed that regular cow’s milk inhibited the absorption of these antioxidants though due to certain milk proteins. Using a mg catechin/g of dry leaf comparison, results indicate that the concentration of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) available from drinking matcha is 137 times greater than the amount of EGCG available from China Green Tips green tea, and at least three times higher than the largest literature value for other green teas.
- It contains L-Theanine, which is very calming and relaxing to the body. I find that because matcha has this, in addition to caffeine, it helps reduce the jittery feeling that caffeine can give you. (This is personal experience!)
- It has chlorophyll that helps support the liver in it’s natural detox stages and promote healthy digestion and a great immune system.
