15 Feb Infertility Unexplained {Holistic Approach}
When you get the devastating answer of “infertility unexplained” – it’s hard to wrap your head around. Like, how can I be struggling with infertility + there is no answer to why?! Unfortunately, women go to taking blood tests at your gynecologist and then straight to IVF with a fertility specialist. There is a lack of in-between solutions.
Today, I want to share with you the top reasons we see infertility unexplained.
Top Four Reasons of Infertility Unexplained
PCOS
PCOS stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome. Most of the time PCOS women are struggling with blood sugar imbalances and high androgen production, which stem from various diet and lifestyle factors. Medication is quick to be given in PCOS women, yet I want to give you hope that diet modification and lifestyle changes CAN impact your PCOS + you can live without negative symptoms.
Since irregular cycles are common in PCOS, a big goal for women is to regain regular cycles and ovulation (aka the Superbowl of the cycle!). If you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS, don’t stop at medication, but keep digging for the root causes of your PCOS.
Undereating + Overexercising
This dynamic duo shows up A LOT in infertility unexplained. It’s one of the first things we assess -even if you tell us that you eat plenty and exercise is fine. I can’t tell you how many times we hear that, yet it ends up being an issue. Many women are eating below 1500 calories (close to what a toddler needs), yet are wondering why adult reproductive system that technically isn’t necessary for survival isn’t working right.
Remember, if you’re eating small amounts of food your body will prioritize the things that keep your alive (HINT: NOT REPRODUCTION). Combining this too much movement or intense exercise, you’re going up a very slippery slope.
We get EXCITED to unpeel this layer back + reinforce a new way of thinking how to eat. Trust me, you’ll like it!
Stress/Adrenal Health
Undeeating + overexercising can play into your stress and overall adrenal health. It’s very stressful when those two things are happening. There might be other environmental factors that are influencing your stress levels. The recommendation of “reducing stress” may seem like a cop out, but it’s a very very real reason that you might have infertility unexplained.
It’s also a reason we like to do adrenal testing in addition to sex hormones to get the FULL picture of what’s influencing your fertility. Pssssttt, I bring adrenals up because THIS IS HUGE IN WHAT WE SEE. Almost every woman that come to us for infertility unexplained has adrenals issues (too high, too low, diurnal pattern is skewed, etc).
Hypothyroidism
Last, but not least, the master controller! The thyroid gland is the master controlled of our metabolism + has a relationship with our ovaries too! To keep it simple, sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism) = sluggish ovulation. Over here on this article we wrote, we decode and unpack how a sluggish thyroid affects ovulation and produces irregular cycles.
Giving yourself optimal thyroid function will benefit your fertility in the long run. And noooo, it doesn’t have to mean you NEED medication (even though that may sometimes be necessary). There are diet + lifestyle changes that can be made to positively impact your thyroid function!
